Town Hall – Jan. 2, 1924

The West LaFayette Public Library Board met in regular session with the following members present: Mr. Vawter, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Price, Mrs. McQueen, and Mr. Burtsfield.

The secretary's report was read and approved.

Mr. Smith of the financial committee gave the financial report for the yaer which showed a balance of $576.00 in the subscription fund, and about 1200.00 in the fund from local taxation.

Mr. Smith moved that $500.00 from the subscription fund be set aside as a sinking fund to be used for other purposes than for maintenance. The motion was properly seconded and passed.

The Finance Committee reported the following budget for the year 1924:

It was moved, seconded, and unanimously passed that this budget as reported be adopted.

In accordance with the adopted budget it was moved that the Librarian's salary be raised to 75.00 per month. This motion was properly seconded and passed.

The Librarian's monthly report was received and ordered filed.

The librarian gave the following report of money in the contingent fund:

Balance on hand Dec. 4 – 4.46

Fines rec'd during month – 7.78

Expenditures during month – 5.71

Balance Jan 2, 1924 – 6.53

In accordance with the adopted budget the book committee was authorized to purchase $75.00 worth of books.

The Librarian reported that at certain hours in the day there was a greater demand for books than one person could handle properly; also, that the cataloging of new books and the placing of them in the shelves ready for public use required more time than one person could do properly. To relieve this situation Mrs. Dickey was authorized to secure help as may seem necessary until the board takes further action.

Mrs. Dickey suggested that a committee be appointed to arrange the program for the district meeting for Librarians to be held here Feb. 14. The suggestion was adopted and Mrs. Price was appointed chairman of the committee.

The Library Board decided to become a member of the American Library Association and the secretary was ordered to draw a warrant for the amount of the fee, namely, $5.00.

The finance committee reported that the Kensington Club donated $2.16 for the purchase of Juvenile Books. The money was ordered sent to the treasury and to be expended as the club desired.

The Time having come for the election of officers for the year 1924, the chairman called for nominations of President, Vice President, and Secretary. The following persons were nominated and duly elected:

F. A. Burtsfield, Secretary

The secretary was requested to notify Mr. Cunningham of his election.

There being no further business the come before the Board, the meeting adjourned.
