Adult and Teen Services Librarian

The successful applicant will join a team of librarians, library staff and volunteers in providing library services to the West Lafayette community. Home to Purdue University, West Lafayette is a diverse and active community where public library service is sought out and appreciated. Duties of this librarian include, but are not limited to:

    • The West Lafayette Public Library is encouraging entrepreneurial work by the library staff, expanding beyond the library's traditional dependence on public tax support. The successful applicant is expected to take a lead role by:
    • Selecting, training, scheduling and supervising volunteers to assist with patron services and other library activities
    • Co-chairing the library's fund-raising committee
    • Researching and applying for grants to help further the library's mission; the successful applicant is expected to raise a minimum of $10,000 in grant funding each year
    • The West Lafayette Public Library has a rich heritage of patron-driven collection development that stretches back to the library's opening in 1923. While embracing new technologies and formats, the Library continues the community's interest in traditional formats as well. This librarian will play an important role in guiding collection development for teens and adults by:
    • Serving as the head of the teen and adult book selection committee and ordering patron requested materials, committee-selected materials, and best sellers
    • Displaying and weeding the adult and teen collections on a rotating schedule to maintain patron interest, currency and condition
    • Utilizing and recommending electronic databases for purchasing or licensing
    • Continuing the development of the West Lafayette Memories digital project
    • Supervising the library's diverse patron services staff in the library's teen and adult service areas including reference librarians and reference aides, volunteer and program coordinators, outreach staff, computer techs, and shelvers
    • Selecting and training staff as the need arises in the patron services area
    • Answering information, technology and reference questions and helping with circulation as needed
    • Working with the Library's active ADA adaptation program
    • Serving on various library and community committees as designated by the library director
    • Maintaining the appropriate number of Librarian Certification educational units (75 LEUs in a 5 year period)
  • Requirements include:
    • ALA-MLS with at least 3 years of supervisory experience
    • Credentials for an Indiana Certification Level 3; higher preferred
    • Comfortable using computers for a variety of tasks including searching, reports, sign and pamphlet design, web articles, and press releases
    • Great communication skills; fluency in English, phone etiquette, email, social media and other communication techniques
    • Fund-raising experience
    • Volunteer supervision experience
    • Experience partnering with community organizations
    • Friendly, easy going manner
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Some evening and weekend hours required
    • Physical labor: lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing book carts, bending & stooping
    • Background check
  • Pluses include:
    • Familiarity with the West Lafayette community
    • Experience serving on Indiana Library Federation or ALA committees
    • Experience training or teaching adults
    • Familiarity with other cultures and/or second language
  • Benefits include:
    • Vacation (10 days after the first year of work)
