Teen Volunteer Opportunities

At this time we are not accepting volunteers in the greyed-out programs. Please contact afletcher@wlaf.lib.in.us for further information.

Earn service hours, gain work experience, and have fun volunteering at West Lafayette Public Library in the Teen department! As a volunteer you might keep our Teen area sparkling and organized, help recommend books to other readers, assist with programs, or be artistic. The time commitment can be as little as 2 hours each month up to 2 hours per week, depending on library needs and your schedule. Volunteers must be currently enrolled in 7th – 12th grade (or homeschool equivalent)

Volunteer expectations:

  • Be on time for your scheduled volunteer shifts
  • Communicate about any absences
  • Be willing to work together with other volunteers
  • Feel empowered to learn and try new things
  • Be committed to improving the library

Current volunteer opportunities:

BOOK SELECTION COMMITTEE
1 hour meeting each month, 1-2 hours of independent reading
Read book reviews and share your input on what books make a great teen collection! The committee meets once a month to discuss reviews and vote on their picks.

DECORATIONS
Various frequency, 1-3 hour shift
Artists and crafters – make the space look great by making posters, signs, and decorations. The library provides the supplies and you let your talents shine.

GAMES, KITS, AND THINGS
1-2 hour shift, any day
Get new tabletop games, STEAM kits, and Library of Things items library-ready before they hit the shelves.

READING BUDDIES
Weekly, 20 – 40 minute shift
Mentor new readers at the library! After being accepted into the program, you will be matched with a Kindergarten – 3rd grade reader and meet each week to be a supportive listener and positive role model as they practice reading skills.

SHELVERS
1 hour shift, any day
Help the library keep shelves looking great by shelving, tidying, and related projects. Great for anyone who likes a quiet task and is good at detail.
