Children’s Department News – August 2019

Weekly Programs
Preschool Story & Crafts for children ages 3 & older
Tuesdays and Fridays 10:30 to 11:15; Children’s Activity Room
Story & craft times are for children who are ages 3 & older and their families or caregivers. Free; no registration. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Please note: There will be no story & craft sessions on August 6 or 9th.

Music & Fun for children ages 2 & older
Wednesdays at 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.; Walnut Room
Children ages 2 and older and their parents or caregivers are invited to sing and dance with Miss Gail. Free; no registration
Please note: There will be no Music & Fun sessions on August 7 or 21.

Lap Sit for babies and children who are 1 year old
Mondays at 10:30 and 11:15 a.m.; Children’s Activity Room
This program is for babies, toddlers, and their parents or caregivers. Make new friends while listening to very easy stories and learning songs with Miss Gail. Free; no registration.

Future Program: On Thursday, September 5, we will be offering a new story time, “Time for Twos”, for children who are 2 years old. It will include easy stories, songs, and a simple craft with Miss Gail. There will be no program on the 4th Thursday of every month, as that is the day the library is closed until noon. Time: 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Summer Reading Club – A Universe of Stories
Thank you for participating in our 2019 Summer Reading Club and attending our many programs. We had lots of fun, and we hope your families did, too.
Important Reminder: Children may collect prizes until Saturday, August 10.

August Events for Children

Lego Builders Club
Saturday, August 10: 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Walnut & Elm Rooms
Lego Builders Club is open to children of all ages. Come and build with the library’s Lego collection. After the program, children may display their creations in the display cases in the library for three weeks.
Children who are age 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Reading to the Dogs!
Saturday, August 24th; 2 to 3 p.m.
Children’s Activity Room, 1st floor

Registration open from August 12th to 23rd

Presented by members of Caring Paws. Come and read to a certified therapy dog. Readers should bring a book from home or select one when they arrive at the library. This program is for children ages 4 and older who are reading.
Register at the children’s desk or by phone from August 12 to 23.

Family Fun Day @ the Library
Sunday, August 25th, 1 to 4 p.m.
Magician, Civic Youth Theatre show, “One Size Fits All”, chalk art, crafts, face painting & more
+ Snacks for everyone
+ A free book for every child 0 to 12 who attends this event!

Free; no registration

Lap Sit every Monday at 10:30 and 11:15 a.m.
Children’s Activity Room; free; no registration
This program is for babies and toddlers and their parents or caregivers. Make new friends while listening to simple stories and learning finger plays and songs with Miss Gail.

Music & Fun with Miss Gail
Wednesday mornings, 10:30 to 11:00; Walnut Room, 2nd floor; free; no registration. Please bring a towel or mat.

July events that are not part of the Summer Reading Club programs

Reading to the Dogs!

Saturday, July 27th: 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.; Walnut & Elm Rooms
Register between Friday, July 12th and Friday, July 26th
Presented by members of Therapy Dogs International. Come and read to a certified therapy dog. Readers should bring a book from home or select one when they arrive at the library. This program is for children ages 4 and older who are reading.

Summer Reading Club: “A Universe of Stories”

Reminder: Children enrolled in the summer reading club are encouraged to read and collect their prizes during July. (The last date to register is July 14th.) Children may collect prizes until Saturday, August 10th. Come to the library soon for the best selection of prizes.

Special Summer Reading Programs in July

Notes: All programs begin at 2 p.m. and end at 3 p.m., except for the Lego Builders Club sessions.
All programs except the nature walk at Celery Bog will be held in the Walnut & Elm Rooms, located on the 2nd floor of the library.
All children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
Programs are free and do not require registration.

Wednesday, July 3: No Program (July 4th holiday break)
SATURDAY, JULY 6: “Creatures from the Bog.” Hike through Celery Bog and learn about the creatures who live there. Tour Lily Nature Center with members of the Engage Nature organization. If it rains, we will remain in the Lily Center and play nature games. Please wear appropriate clothing for a hike! Meet at the entrance to the Lilly Nature Center @ 2:00. The entrance to the road leading to the center’s parking lot is at 1620 Lindberg Road. Program time: 2 to 3 p.m.
Wednesday, July 10: Craft Day: “Night Creatures”
SATURDAY, JULY 13: Lego Builders Club (2 to 3:30 p.m.)
Wednesday, July 17: “Art + Science = Fun”: Make straw-powered rockets
SATURDAY, JULY 20:Lunar Landing Day” with Matt Gerberich, aerospace engineer. Learn about the first lunar landing. Make a craft with Brittany Gerberich and the children’s department staff.
Wednesday, July 24: Messy Art Day. Wear old clothes. We will be using paint. Bring a rock, if you would like to make a “moon rock.”
SATURDAY, JULY 27: No summer reading program
Wednesday, July 31: Lego Builders Club (2 to 3:30 p.m.)
