Reading to the Dogs on December 14

Children ages 4 and older who are reading are invited to read to a certified therapy dog in the children’s activity room.
Spaces are available at 2:15, 2:30, and 2:45 p.m.
To reserve a space, please call the library by noon on December 14.

Winter Reading Club

The West Lafayette Public Library is excited to launch our 2019 Winter Reading Club!

Log your minutes in ReaderZone to earn prizes and beat the winter blahs! All ages can participate, and one lucky individual from each age group will win a $50 Amazon gift card!

This year’s Winter Reading Club will last from December 1st, 2019 through January 31st, 2020. Only reading done between these dates will count to your program minutes.

To register:

1. Download the Reader Zone app or visit

2. Sign up for a free account (or log in, if you’ve participated through Reader Zone before)
FAMILIES: If you wish to record for children and yourself on one account, be sure to register as a Parent. This will give you the ability to register multiple persons to one account.

3. Enter our unique program code: wlpl

4. Choose which age group you fit into. You may only participate in ONE age group!
Children (infants-6th grade)
Teens (7th grade-12th grade)
Adults (18+ years old)

5. As you read each day, log into Reader Zone and record your minutes read!


Read 20 hours (1200 minutes) and choose a bookmark prize.
Read 50 hours (3000 minutes) and can choose a small prize.

Visit the Circulation Desk to claim your prize as you reach the goals. 

You may only earn each prize once.

Prizes may be claimed through February 8th, 2020.

Grand Prizes:

All participants can earn entries into our end-of-program contest just by recording minutes read! 

One child, one teen, and one adult will each receive a $50 Amazon gift card as a grand prize.

Children – earn 1 entry after every 30 minutes read
Teens/Adults – earn 1 entry after every 60 minutes read

Winners will be announced at the Winter Reading Club party on Saturday, February 8th. (You do not need to be present to win.)

December Children’s Department News

Weekly Programs:
Lap Sit for babies and 1 year old children
Mondays at 10:30 and 11:15 a.m.
This program is for babies, toddlers, and their parents or caregivers. Make new friends while listening to very easy stories and learning songs with Miss Gail. Free; no registration.
Location: Children’s Activity Room. There will be no lap sit on December 23 or 30.

Time for Twos –
Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Miss Gail is leading a new story time for children who are 2 years old. It includes stories, songs, and a simple craft. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free; no registration.
Location: Children’s Activity Room.
Note – There will be no session on December 26 or January 2, as the library will be not be open until noon on those days.

Music & Fun for children ages 2 and older
Wednesdays at 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Children ages 2 and older and their parents or caregivers are invited to sing and dance with Miss Gail. Free; no registration
Location: Walnut Room, 2nd floor of the library
Note: There will be no Music & Fun sessions on December 25 or January 1, as the library will be closed for the holidays on those days.

Preschool Story & Crafts for children ages 3 and older
Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Story & craft times are for children ages 3 and older and their families or caregivers. Free; no registration. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Location: Children’s Activity Room
Note: No story and crafts on December 24 or 31. The library will be closed for winter holidays on those days.

Winter Reading Club for Everyone
December 1 – January 31
The winter Reading Club will be returning to the WLPL!
All ages of readers and listeners, infants through adults, are encouraged to register and record their reading activity during December and January. Participation is done fully online through the ReaderZone app or website (use code: wlpl).
Participants are entered to win a $50 Amazon gift card and are also invited to attend the end-of-program party on Saturday, February 8, 2020.

Winter Holidays Family Craft Day
Saturday, December 7th: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Walnut & Elm Rooms, 2nd floor

Bring your families to the library to make winter and December Holidays crafts. Our crafts day is for children ages 2 and older and their families or caregivers. (An adult must stay with children who are 8 and younger.) There will be samples, instructions, and supplies to make a large selection of crafts. Free; no registration.

Reading to the Dogs!
Saturday, December 14th: 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Children’s Activity Room

For children ages 4 and older. Dogs from Therapy Dogs International will be waiting and eager to listen to children read stories to them.
Registration required by Friday, December 13 at the children’s desk or by phone.

Lego Builders Club
Saturday, December 21st: 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Walnut & Elm Rooms

Children ages 2 through 12 are invited to build with the library’s collection of Lego blocks and Duplo blocks. Children who are 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Come and build and make new friends. No registration or fee.
